Splattering

Splattering allows you to create random patterns  and shapes on your piece in a fun and messy manner (the two seem to go together, don't they).  Splattering can be used alone for effect or over other techniques to add a bit of 'spice' and added color.

As we mentioned, splattering is messy so we urge that you take care to be sure the underglaze being splattered does not go places it shouldn't.  As you know, the underglaze is totally nontoxic and washable so getting it on other artists is not horrible but they may take some negative interest should you provide 'interesting' and uninvited splattering on their pieces.  Splattering has the habit of going far so take care.

Step 1

If you wish, paint the piece using other techniques such as the flowing coat.

Step 2

Take a stiff toothbrush and moisten the bristles in the clean water, removing any excess water.  Insert the bristles into the desired underglaze color.

Step 3

Use your thumb or finger to flick the bristles so the underglaze splatters on your piece.

Step 4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 using different underglaze colors as desired.  Make fun patterns as you wish.

Step 5

Another method of splattering is to use your fingers to flick underglaze onto your piece.

Step 6

Apologize to other artists who have been the recipients of your artistic zeal and flicking.
